Origin: Chile, Argentina and Brazil

Latin Name: Parabuteo Unicinctus

Habitat: Open woodland, savannah and orchards

Diet: Medium sized mammals such as rabbits, hares, quail and reptiles

Lifespan: Up to 25 years

Average Size: Length: 59 cm., Weight: 1,600 grams

Characteristics:

Harris Hawks are a medium to large bird of prey.  They have dark brown plumage with chestnut shoulders, wing linings and thighs and white on the base and tip of the tail.  They have long yellow legs and a yellow core.  Female hawks are approx. 35 – 40% larger than the male and the female is the dominant bird.  No other bird of prey is known to hunt in groups as routinely as this species.
